The Irrevocable Sting

(c) Shilpa Sandesh

Born self-ruling,
Clear and unimpeded,
Her soul
Was a crystal's reflection;

Perspicuous and lucid,
Coherent and pure,
Her soul
Was unclouded and bright,
Transparent to everyone's sight;

Time passed, and she grew,
Into a tender and genial self,
An effervescent and blazing spirit,
Strings tethered,
Emotions developed,
Attachments born,
Inclinations so strong;

Until she met
the wicked souls,
masked in the mankind's face,
Appearances so real,
Fallaciously humble,
Foes disguised as friends,
Sham and deception,
Concealed in Love,
Where all seemed true,
But all proved pretense,
Ersatz and spurious;

Downtrodden is her spirit,
Pricked and wounded,
Her now sterile self,
Wandering solitary,
In a sequestered desert,
The desert of hurt,
With scorpions of memories,
And sting of desolation,
Which has now become,
The irrevocable sting!
